New Funding for AWWOA Training Initiatives

The Alberta Water and Wastewater Operators Association was recently named as the recipient of funds from a creative sentencing project resulting from a conviction under the Alberta Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act. The offence, which was heard before the Honorable Judge J. R. Jaqcues in the Provincial Court of Alberta, on April 2, 2009, was for contravention of the terms and conditions of an approval contrary to section 227(e) of the Act. The Crown and Defence Counsel made a joint submission to the Court for a creative sentencing project, submitted by the AWWOA, for the purpose of updating training course materials, funding a new NAIT water and wastewater scholarship and a training course subsidy for operators of small rural water and wastewater facilities.

Our sincere thanks to Mr. Ron Kruhlak of McLennan Ross LLP, Ms. Susan McRory, Environmental Coordinator, Special Prosecutions, Alberta Environment and Ms. Suzanne Thomas of Duncan and Craig LLP for their efforts in making the creative sentencing project successful. Operators and owners of water and wastewater facilities across Alberta will definitely benefit from this creative initiative.

Details on the new scholarship and training initiatives will be posted on the AWWOA website www.awwoa.ab.ca and in upcoming issues of the AWWOA newsletter as they become available.
