The Technical Area of the AWWOA web site is provided for any Operator that would like some insight into various topics of interest within the field of water and wastewater treatment. Most all of the papers presented come from technical sessions held during the Associations' Annual Seminars. However, if any of you would like to have a paper published on this site, we would welcome your effort. E-mail awwoa@awwoa.ab.ca with your information and arrangements can be made to publish your paper.

Here you will find a number of papers that were presented at the AWWOA 2006 Annual Seminar held in Banff. A short synopsis details each of the papers presented.

The following papers are in an Adobe Acrobat PDF file format. You will need to have the Acrobat Reader installed in your computer in order to view these files or be using the latest browser with the Adobe plug-in installed.

Selection of alum and polyaluminum coagulants:
principles and applications

David J. Pernitsky and James K. Edzwald

This paper presents guidelines for the selection and use of polyaluminum chloride (PACI) coagulants and alum in terms of raw water quality and treatment method. The concentration of natural organic matter (NOM) was found to be the most important parameter affecting coagulant dose. The nature of the NOM, as measured by the specific ultraviolet absorbance (SUVA), was useful for predicting the degree of NOM removal expected. Raw water alkalinity, as it relates to the pH of coagulation, was found to be very important for choosing one coagulant type over another. PACI basicity should be matched to raw water alkalinity, so that coagulation pH is as close as possible to the pH of minimum solubility of the coagulant. The solids separation process used for treatment was also found to be important for coagulation selection. Raw waters coagulated with PACIs containing sulfate were found to have the best settling characteristics, but showed the highest headloss rates in direct filtration applications. Dissolved air floatation (DAF) performance was relatively insensitive to coagulant type.

Critical Infrastructure Operator

A paper presented by Vincent Chiew P.Eng.
Water Resources - Bonnybrook Wastewater Treatment Plant
The City of Calgary
ABSTRACT:

Critical Infrastructure (CI) plays a crucial role in sustaining the well being of a society, which means operator of CI is a key component in that effort. This paper focuses on Water and Wastewater operator roles and responsibilities in relation to CI. The content will be intermixed between Canada and the United States (US) to provide a North American perspective. In conclusion, some lessons learned from the Blackout in Eastern Canada and United States back in 2003 are presented, to show potential similar impact on our industry.

Guidance Document for Preparing an Operations Program

A paper presented by Alberta Environment
Regional Services
Central Region - Red Deer
ABSTRACT:

This document is intended to be used by operators of high quality groundwater facilities and systems consisting solely of a water distribution system to:

  1. Initiate the development of an operations program including standard operating procedures (SOPs) and emergency response plans (ERPs); and
  2. To help ensure the operations program has a maximum benefit to the waterworks systems.

This guidance document discusses the requirements specified by the code and provides a list of suggested SOPs and ERPs for consideration by the operators.
As each facility will have unique needs that may require additional or different SOPs and ERPs, this document is meant to provide a starting point and is not intended to be all-inclusive.

Operating Experience Survey of Septage Receiving Facilities

A paper presented by Ida Soh, EIT and Mike Whalley, P.Eng.
Associated Engineering
Calgary, AB.
ABSTRACT:

This paper presents two case studies including the design and operation of a Septage Receiving Station and Septage Treatment Facility. In addition, this paper summarizes results of operating experience from five Septage Receiving Facilities across Canada. The survey revealed the operation and maintenance routines as well as challenges of the Septage Receiving Facilities. It also provided insights for possible improvements to future Septage Receiving Facility designs, which in turn would facilitate their operation and maintenance.
