Water & Wastewater Operators
Training Program
2010-2011
INTRODUCTION
Operator training is a vital component to ensure optimum operation of facilities and to ensure protection of public health, and the environment. The Alberta Water and Wastewater Operators administers a number of training courses for MUNICIPAL and some INDUSTRIAL WATER & WASTEWATER FACILITY OPERATORS. Alberta Environment recognizes all of these courses and has awarded Continuing Education Units (CEU's) to them. A list of CEUs is available here for these courses and many others.
These courses are intended to complement those presented by other agencies and institutions. In some cases, they may bridge the gap between formal, full-time training, and on-the-job instruction.
The information included on these pages lists courses in three categories.
CLASSROOM COURSES
- Students are responsible for their own accommodation and meals.
- No walk-in/on-site registrations allowed
- Should the minimum enrollment not be reached at least 30 days prior to a course, it will be cancelled and registrants will be notified. All fees for cancelled courses will be refunded.
- Training is offered from September to June.
- Students to bring a calculator to class.
Continuing Education Training
- Intended as ongoing and upgrading training.
- Vary in length from 1 to 5 days
- For new or long term operators in the field
Certification Exam Preparation
- Intended as preparation / study courses for the Alberta Environment Operator Certification Exams or to provide operations information.
- These classroom courses vary in length from 2 to 4 days

Training Subsidy for Small Public Facilities
(Classroom Courses Only)
On April 2, 2009 AWWOA was named as the recipient of funds from a creative sentencing project resulting from a conviction under the Alberta Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act. The Crown and Defense Counsel made a joint submission to the Court for a creative sentencing project, submitted by the AWWOA, for the purpose of updating training course materials, funding a new NAIT Water and Wastewater Scholarship and a Training Course Subsidy for operators of small rural water and wastewater facilities.
The Training Course Subsidy of 25% is to encourage attendance of operators, from small public facilities serving under 5,000 people, at Alberta Environment approved AWWOA classroom training courses. The 25% registration fee reduction per operator, for “small facilities”, is to offset training costs, and is applied to the registration fee.
The cost of each course, where a participant qualifies for this subsidy, has been noted under each classroom course listed in this program.

CORRESPONDENCE and HOME STUDY COURSES
- Useful for those wishing to study at home or work.
- Students have one year from receipt of materials to complete these courses.
- Anyone who does not complete the correspondence or home study course within the one year time frame must re-register, re-pay, and re-take the course
- Registrations accepted all year.
- Correspondence courses consist of mail-in lessons, reference manuals and a locally supervised course completion exam, DVD's are included but must be returned to the AWWOA office.
- Home study courses are to be completed and self-marked. A locally supervised course completion exam is conducted. All home study material may be kept.
ON-LINE TRAINING
- Students have 6 months from registration date to complete an on-line training course.
- Useful for those wishing to study at home or work.
- Registrations accepted all year.
- Course consists of modules for study, which are completed on-line and all quiz material is auto-marked.
- On-line assistance via instructor e-mail and "chat' link.
- Course completion exam is proctored and automatically marked on-line, student's supervisor (proctor) is provided with a password to unlock course completion exam.
GENERAL INFORMATION
- The courses listed on this web site are accredited for CEU's by Alberta Environment.
- To register for a course; fill out the registration form available HERE and fax it to 780-454-7748. There is also a registration form provided on page 45 of the Training booklet.
- All registrations will be confirmed by return fax or email. If you do not receive a confirmation notice, you are not registered.
- The pass mark on all AWWOA course completion exams is 70%. Anyone achieving between 60 - 69% may re-write the final course exam once. Anyone achieving less that 60% must re-register, re-pay and re-take the course.
- As space is limited in some courses, all applicants will be processed on a "first received" basis.
- Registeration fees are payable on registration, prior to the course.
COURSE CERTIFICATES
If you require a re-issue of an AWWOA Course Certificate please download and fill out the following form and mail it back with the $20.00 payment for each certificate required.

REFUND POLICY
A service charge of $75 will be levied for a cancellation notice of more than 30 days. Where less than 30 days notices of cancellation is received, NO refund will be allowed. Substitutions of registrants may be accepted if course prerequisites are met.
BANFF OPERATORS SEMINAR
Registration for the 2011 Banff Operators Seminar begins on September 1, 2010. A registration form is available HERE and maybe faxed to 780-454-7748 up to March 3, 2011 at which point pre-registraion for the 2011 Banff Seminar will close. Applications received after that date will require on-site registration in Banff and payment must then be made by cash or credit card.
